An alternative to unreliable AI detection for faculty

Process Feedback creates a writing process report for each piece of work that students complete. The report shows writing time, revisions, copy-paste events, and AI use. Faculty and students can look at it together, so the conversation is about how the work was done, not a score.

With a writing process report:

  • Students can be assigned to self-reflect on their AI use
  • Faculty can ask students to submit their writing process report
  • Faculty check if and how a student used AI
  • Spot students who are struggling in the class

Over all, Process Feedback sets the stage for honest and concrete conversations about AI and writing that become genuine learning moments for students.

Works in the LMS your campus already uses

Process Feedback works inside the learning management systems most colleges use, as well as in Google Docs and Microsoft Word. Campuses can start with browser extensions and add LTI 1.3 integration later.

Faculty can try it before the campus decides

Individual instructors can use Process Feedback for free, without an account and without a campus agreement. That lets a department or a center for teaching and learning see how it works in real courses before any procurement step.

When the campus is ready for a formal rollout, an institutional agreement adds a Data Privacy Agreement, compliance documents, and support.

I'm an instructional designer and recommend this extension to all the faculty I work with. It is free and safe.

Review a whole class in one dashboard

The teacher dashboard loads many students' writing process reports at once, so faculty and TAs can compare how students approached the same assignment.

The dashboard helps faculty:

  • See all students' report in one place
  • Compare copy-paste, AI use, and writing linearity
  • Review a class without opening each report

If You Have a Large Class

ProcessFeedback is a useful (and free!) tool that enables visualization of the writing or coding process, opportunities for self-reflection and feedback, abundant user support, and tools for scaling use for large-enrolling courses.

Documents for IT, privacy, and procurement review

With the browser extensions and plugins, report data stays on the user's device and no student data is collected. Campuses that need LTI integration can choose a tier with governed data handling and optional region-specific hosting.

Institutional requirements such as DPAs, VPAT, and HECVAT compliance documents

Available for institutional review:

  • Signed Data Privacy Agreement (DPA or DSA)
  • VPAT accessibility conformance reports
  • HECVAT and security documentation, on request
  • Alignment with FERPA, GDPR, and the Australian Privacy Principles
  • A sample data privacy certificate

Start with a free one-term pilot

Campuses can run a free pilot for one academic term before signing an annual agreement. The first version of Process Feedback was itself tested in pilot studies at several universities in Missouri and Arkansas in Fall 2023.

The one-term pilot includes:

  • Signed Data Privacy Agreement (DPA)
  • VPAT and HECVAT documentation for procurement review
  • Training sessions for faculty
  • Email support with agreed response times
  • Clear success criteria defined upfront
