About

Process Feedback is a tool for writers and coders. It translates the journey of a writing or coding task to easy and insightful visualizations. The visuals help you dissect and better understand the journey with data about time management, breaks taken, typing fluency, struggles, and habits. Such process related insights can profoundly increase anyone’s understanding of their own creative processes and improve higher-order thinking skills. With Process Feedback, educators, in particular, can better comprehend their students’ unique writing styles and habits. Provide educators with nuanced insights into their students’ writing journeys, it serves as a conduit for constructive feedback. Process Feedback’s prowess was highlighted in the UMSL Daily News and further substantiated by a research article featured in the double-blind peer-reviewed journal, Education Science, in September 2023.

History

Process Feedback was launched in April 2023, just a few months after the release of ChatGPT. Dr. Badri Adhikari, an associate professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, is the inventor and the driving force of Process Feedback. After pilot tests in numerous courses at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Arkansas State University, and Saint Louis University throughout the fall of 2023, a revised and improved version of the tool was released in January 2024. In the era of AI, Process Feedback emerges not merely as a tool but as a testament to the collaborative spirit that drives progress in educational technology.

Vision

At the heart of Process Feedback lies a vision that transcends its mere functionality. We aim to not only inform but to empower students and educators on a global scale through the lens of process-aware teaching and learning. Picture a world where education isn’t just about the destination but also the journey. It’s about understanding the ‘why’, and the ‘how’ as much as the ‘what’ of anyone’s learning process. This is the essence of our vision – a vision that seeks to revolutionize the way we approach teaching and learning. While Process Feedback can be instantly helpful for any class, our vision isn’t just about today’s assignments or tomorrow’s exams; it’s about equipping students with the tools to navigate the challenges of learning, fostering a mindset that transcends the classroom. We believe that Process Feedback is more than a tool; it’s a catalyst for a paradigm shift in education, where the journey is as important as the destination, and metacognitive thinking reigns supreme. Join us in shaping this vision for a brighter and more informed future in education.

Mission

Our mission resonates globally: to craft and provide accessible, privacy-respecting tools that champion process-aware teaching and learning. We believe in empowering educators and learners alike through innovative solutions that prioritize accessibility and uphold the utmost respect for privacy. It’s not just about tools; it’s about developing an educational ecosystem where the journey is as important as the destination. Join us in shaping a future where education is inclusive, insightful, and centered around the individual’s unique learning process.

Our global mission is to build and serve accessible and privacy-respectful tools for process-aware teaching and learning.

How it Works

01

Record the Process

As you write or code in Process Feedback, it creates snapshots of your editor content and saves to your local device. It tracks your edits, the time spent, the frequency of revisions or returns to specific paragraphs, and other pertinent details of your writing or coding journey.

02

Explore the Process

The recorded process information can be viewed anytime in the form of several insightful and easy charts. For example, a chart can show how often you took breaks during the writing or how often the sentences were revised after the first typing. These charts are interactive. They allow you to explore and drill down to specific details.

03

Show the Process

After writing, you can download a process report PDF which includes these process-revealing charts along with the final writing. In the case of coding, the report also includes code output and execution history. As needed, the report can be shared with an educator or peers.

04

Feedback on the Process

With all the process data, acquiring feedback on the process is easy. Writers and coder can self-reflect and self-learn from their won process. They can also acquire feedback on their process from peers and their instructors.

Founder's Message

"In education, both the journey behind a work and its final outcome hold equal importance. Yet, offering feedback on the formative process, despite its critical nature, remains a challenge in many educational environments. Process Feedback is dedicated to reshaping these outcome-centric educational practices, offering a novel and robust way to visualize a writing or programming task as an evolving narrative conveyed through insightful charts. These visualizations provide insightful, empowering, and personalized process-oriented feedback to learners and help improve their cognitive and metacognitive skills. Likewise, they assist educators in enhancing their effectiveness in the process-aware teaching of writing or computer programming. Join us in shaping the future of education and learning."

Why use Process Feedback?

Research shows that writing and computer programming improve our cognitive and computational thinking. Process-aware writing or coding, in particular, is demonstrated to improve not just basic thinking skills but higher-order thinking skills such as planning and organizing. It improves metacognition and self-awareness. In the absence of any tools to look back and tap into the creative process of writing or coding, Process Feedback solves a long-standing problem in education. In educational settings, shifting the focus from written outcomes to the process, to a certain extent, also addresses the issue of over-reliance on chatbots. Moreover, we don’t track writers and coders or collect any personal data, and there is no sign-up or login required to use the tool. You can use it with confidence, knowing that your privacy is protected. Finally, Process Feedback easily integrates with existing learning management systems and makes writing and coding fun, engaging, and works regardless of whether we write independently or AI-assisted.
